The First Step Isn’t a First Until You Take It
The First Step Isn’t a First Until You Take It.
I’ve had this page ready for a long time.
Like…a really long time.
The idea was there. The page was there. The name was there. The thoughts were there. And yet, somehow, I kept finding reasons not to actually write the first post.
I would think about it at night. I’d have ideas running through my head when I was lying in bed, when there was nothing else competing for my attention.
I should write that down.
I should finally start.
I know what I want to say.
And then morning would come.
Life would start moving again. There would be other things to do, other things to think about, and that little idea would get pushed back to wherever all of our unfinished thoughts seem to go.
Until the next night.
And then the cycle would start all over again.
Sound familiar?
I think we all have something like this.
Maybe it isn't a blog.
Maybe it's the appointment you've been meaning to schedule.
Maybe it's the conversation you've been avoiding.
Maybe it's finally making a change in the way you're taking care of your emotional health.
Maybe it's dealing with stress that you've gotten so used to carrying that you barely notice it anymore.
Maybe it's looking at your physical health, your digestion, your sleep, your relationships, or your overall wellbeing and admitting that something needs to change.
Maybe it's forgiving someone.
Or maybe it's forgiving yourself.
And maybe it's something much bigger than any of those things.
The interesting thing is that we often don't need someone to tell us what that thing is.
We already know.
It's the thing that pops into our head when we're lying in bed.
It's the thing we say we're going to get around to when life slows down.
It's the thing that sits quietly in the back of our minds while we go about our days.
And sometimes, we can spend years thinking about taking that first step without ever actually taking it.
But here's what I've been thinking about lately:
The first step isn't really a first step until you take it.
Thinking about it isn't taking it.
Planning it isn't taking it.
Talking about it isn't taking it.
Waiting until the timing is perfect definitely isn't taking it.
At some point, you have to push the button.
You have to make the appointment.
You have to make the phone call.
You have to open the document.
You have to start the conversation.
You have to write the first paragraph.
You have to do the one thing that turns an idea into something real.
And that's what happened with this.
I finally pushed the button.
And here's the funny part: the amount of energy it took to get myself to that first step was far greater than the energy it took once I was actually moving.
That seems to be how it works.
The beginning can feel enormous.
We build it up in our heads. We imagine everything that could go wrong. We think about how much work it will take. We wonder whether anyone will care, whether we'll be good enough, whether we're doing it the right way.
So we wait.
But once we actually begin, something changes.
The next step doesn't seem quite so impossible.
Then there's another.
And another.
Before long, you're not standing at the beginning anymore.
You're moving.
That's momentum.
And sometimes momentum is exactly what we need.
Not perfection.
Not a five-year plan.
Not every answer figured out.
Just movement.
One small action that changes the direction you're facing.
And you never really know where that one action might lead.
A simple appointment could lead to finally addressing something you've been ignoring.
A difficult conversation could change a relationship.
Taking your emotional health seriously could change the way you show up for yourself and the people around you.
Making one decision about your physical health could change your habits, your energy, and your future.
Choosing forgiveness could release something you've been carrying for far longer than you realized.
And sometimes, one decision doesn't just change your life.
It changes the lives of the people around you.
Your family.
Your children.
Your relationships.
The people who depend on you.
The people who love you.
Because our lives are connected. What we choose to do—or not do—rarely affects only us.
So I'm wondering:
What's your first step?
What is that thing you've been thinking about?
The thing you remember right before you fall asleep.
The thing you promise yourself you'll deal with when you have more time.
The thing you keep putting off because taking the first step feels harder than continuing to stay where you are.
What would happen if you stopped thinking about it for a moment and simply did the first thing?
Not everything.
Just the first thing.
Make the appointment.
Send the email.
Have the conversation.
Write the page.
Ask for help.
Forgive.
Begin.
Because maybe the thing you've been waiting for isn't another sign, another perfect moment, or another burst of motivation.
Maybe you've been waiting for yourself.
And maybe today is the day you finally take that first step.
As for me, this is mine.

It all begins with an idea.
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
